English language and community support

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) courses

The adult learning provider, Workers' Educational Association (WEA), has set up online ESOL courses. The courses are funded for Ukrainian guests. You can register for WEA courses either online, or by calling 0300 3033464

Cambridgeshire Skills provides many courses. They help residents to develop their skills, progress in work and education, and bring people together. It currently offers many ESOL Skills for Life courses suitable for guests. There is also a café to meet and mix with other ESOL learners.

Community groups language lessons

The Cambridge Russian-Speaking Society (CamRuSS) offers free English lessons and is supported by more than 30 volunteers, 20 teachers and assistants.

It takes place at:

St Andrew’s Street Baptist Church, Cambridge CB2 3AR

The Society also offers free tours of Cambridge in Ukrainian for new guests. To book, call or text Tanya on 07815 101481 or check for updates at Tangential Cambridge.

It also runs a helpline to help Ukrainian refugees communicate with their host families. It provides translation between Russian, English, and Ukrainian. The helpline 05603 025975 runs from 9am to 6pm on weekdays and 10am to 5pm on Saturdays.  

 

Cambridge4Ukraine

Cambridge4Ukraine - волонтерська ініціатива, заснована українською спільнотою в Кембриджі.

Cambridge4Ukraine is a volunteer initiative set up by Ukrainians in Cambridge. It helps to match sponsors with those fleeing Ukraine. It also provides support to arrivals.

There is a warm welcome for Ukrainians and hosts every Wednesday. This takes place at Cottenham Community Café from 10am to 12pm. It is a friendly, relaxing space to meet up with others, with free drinks and cake. An English language teacher is there as well, offering informal drop-in lessons.
