Six Free Trees

green background, white and blue outlines of drawn trees with white cloud and sun

Please note this scheme is now closed for 2024.

We’re offering 6 free trees to every parish council in South Cambridgeshire which can be plated on either parish council or school land.

You can also apply to plant 1 larger pot-grown tree if that suits the location better.

You can choose from our list of native trees including:

  • field maple
  • alder
  • silver birch
  • hornbeam
  • hawthorn
  • beech, wild cherry
  • oak
  • rowan

We’ll also supply guards, stakes, and ties, which are bio-based and compostable.

To help the trees grow, people involved in the scheme will need to arrange aftercare for the trees, such as spring and summer watering for the first 3 years. For more guidance, read about planting advice. Our Tree Warden network supports this scheme and provides up-to-date information on tree issues.

Benefits of planting trees

We’ve committed to doubling nature and reaching net zero by 2050. Tree planting helps to reach this goal by:

  • offsetting the environmental impact of building work and developments
  • absorbing and storing carbon dioxide emissions, which drive global warming
  • purifying our air and water
  • providing homes for wildlife
  • making our landscapes more beautiful.
