Public Sector Equality Duty
At the council we have a commitment to equality and diversity. We work hard to find and remove anything that stops people from using our services, such as finding out information about our services, or getting a job with the council.
Aims
As a council we have to follow the Public Sector Equality Duty. It says we have to:
- eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment, and victimisation
- advance equality of opportunity between those who share a protected characteristic and those who do not
- foster positive relationships between those who share a protected characteristic and those who do not
Equality Scheme
The purpose of our Equality Scheme is to:
- set our equality goals for 2020 to 2024 and show how they support the Public Sector Equality Duty
- explain how we include equality in our services
- outline the equality responsibilities of the council, its employees, and elected representatives
- set up ways to review and track our progress on these equality goals

Equality Objectives
We aim to achieve the equality goals (objectives) of the Public Sector Equality Duty between 2020 and 2024. We have outlined examples of how we’re meeting the following objectives:
Objective 1: Understand the diversity within South Cambridgeshire. Take action to close the gap in outcomes between disadvantaged groups and the wider community.
Objective 2: Be an employer that values diversity and see the strength of a diverse workforce.
Objective 3: Include protected groups in discussions about the future of the district.
